Lin Carter was an American writer from Florida, particularly known for fantasy and science fiction works. He was also a script-writer for the original Spider-Man animated series. Following his military service in the Korean War, Carter spend nearly two decades working in the advertising industry and as a copywriter for various publishers. Though he published a few literary works during the 1950s, he did not become a full-time writer until 1969.
His work was consciously imitative of the themes, subjects and styles of authors which he personally admired, as indicated in the introductory notes of several of his novels and anthologies. He wrote several works in the styles of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, James Branch Cabell, Lord Dunsany, Clark Ashton Smith, and H. P. Lovecraft. He also edited and completed a number of unfinished stories left in the notes of the deceased Robert E. Howard and Clark Ashton Smith.
Carter was an editor for Ballantine Books from 1969 until 1974, and used the position to bring several then-obscure books of fantasy back into print under the "Adult Fantasy" line of the publisher. He is credited with reviving interest in the works and biographies of several long-gone writers.
Carter's literary career declined in the 1980s due to his health problems. He suffered from lung cancer, and he became increasingly depressed and reclusive. He was eventually hospitalized for emphysema, and he died in the hospital due to cardiac arrest.
