Yuriy Oganesyan is a Soviet and Russian scientist of Armenian origin, specialist in experimental nuclear physics, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. One of the leading experts in the field of nuclear physics and the study of superheavy elements. He made a significant contribution to the development of world science and became the only living scientist to have a chemical element named after him.
He graduated from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute and spent most of his scientific career at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, where he headed the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions for many years. Under Oganesyan's leadership, new superheavy elements of the periodic table were synthesized. Research conducted in Dubna in collaboration with international research centers yielded elements with atomic numbers from 113 to 118, completing the seventh period of the periodic table.
The element with atomic number 118 was named oganesson in honor of Yuriy Oganesyan. The decision was approved by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry in 2016. This is a unique case in the history of science, when a chemical element was named after a scientist during his lifetime.
Over the years of his scientific career, Yuriy Oganesyan published over 300 scientific papers and became the author of fundamental research in the field of nuclear reactions and the synthesis of new elements. He is an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a laureate of state prizes and many international scientific awards. His name occupies a special place in the history of world science.
