Rajat is a Mumbai-based screenwriter and director who works primarily in the Hindi film industry. Born in Pune, his childhood was spent frequenting its single screen cinemas such as Alankar, Victory, Gunjan and West-End in their twilight years. He spent his teenage years in the U.K., where his schooling gave him his first exposure to world cinema and literature. A graduate in Film and Television Studies from the University of Nottingham, he did his final year thesis on 'Hindi Masala Cinema', which won the Best Dissertation of the Year Award. He began his career in Mumbai at Eros International in 2017, as an in-house writer, and producer on shows by filmmakers such as Rohan Sippy and Siddharth Anand. Since 2019, he has written independently for filmmakers including Ekta Kapoor, Vikas Bahl and Prakash Kovelamudi. In 2024, he made his directorial debut with Amar Aaj Marega, a tragicomedy starring Prakash Jha and Saurabh Sachdeva, which he describes as the perfect confluence of his taste for macabre humor and his innate Bollywood sensibilities. The film premiered at IFFI as a part of the Indian Panorama section and screened at multiple international festivals garnering critical acclaim. He is currently developing original projects, both films and series, in genres including action, comedy and biographical drama.
