Sebastian Saam, born in Passau (Germany) in 1974, began working as a TV journalist in the early 2000s after studying political science and sociology in Hamburg and Paris. In 2006 he completed an MA in human rights studies in Sarajevo. Two years later, he directed the documentary "A wall of silence" (26 minutes) in Croatia for Amnesty International. He moved on to direct the music documentary "Rock in a hard place" (40 minutes) in Lebanon in 2012. Throughout the 2010s Sebastian Saam continued working as a journalist for different TV stations, which included the writing and presenting of more than 50 short documentary films for DW-TV's football (soccer) show "Kick Off". Since 2019 he has been making feature films for television, such as the climate change-focused series on European lakes "Stille Wasser/Voyage en eaux calmes" (2024-2025) for ARTE or the sport documentary "Countdown in Lockdown: The Rocky Road to Tokyo" (2021) for DW-TV. "El arte de perder - The Art of Losing" (2022) on the life of Chilean one-armed guitar player Andrés Godoy is his first independently produced feature-length documentary film that has won several international awards.
