He studied zoology, psychology, and electrical engineering in Hanover. From 1954, he worked as a writer in the fields of ethology and sensory physiology. He was an elected member of the Literature Section of the Free Academy of Hamburg and was awarded the Theodor Wolff Prize. He published 30 books, which were translated into 20 languages, became best sellers in many countries and reached a total number of more than 8 million copies.
