Yeni Alvarez is a Cuban American actress, voiceover artist, and writer, best known for her role as Anita in the Spanish sitcom "Los Beltran." She is also one of the "divas" behind the blog TravelingDiva.com and describes herself as a "bon vivant."
Career In 1999, Alvarez was cast as Anita in "Los Beltran," a role she played until the series ended in 2001. Since then, she has focused mainly on voiceover work. Her voice roles include Carmela on Disney's Handy Manny, Aquamaria in the Static Shock episode "Wet and Wild," as well as parts in Glenn Martin DDS, the Guardians of Luna TV series, and video games like Freedom: First Resistance and Total Overdose: A Gunslinger's Tale in Mexico. Alvarez has also appeared on screen in shows such as Resurrection Blvd., Line of Fire, Judging Amy, Without a Trace, and Criminal Minds.
In 2008, she launched TravelingDiva.com, a blog centered on travel, Latin culture, and Los Angeles nightlife. The blog is part of Alvarez Media, a literary and artist public relations company she owns.
Personal Life Born in Cuba, Alvarez emigrated with her family to Miami, Florida, via Panama at the age of ten. She studied at the Young Actors Workshop and Marymount Manhattan College before earning a BFA in Fine Arts from Florida International University in 1995.
A fan of salsa singer Celia Cruz, Alvarez met her while emceeing a Cuban Festival in Los Angeles where Cruz was headlining. When Alvarez asked for Cruz’s autograph, Cruz smiled and said, "Ay, mira quien es! La chiquita de 'Los Beltran.'" ("Oh, look who it is! The girl from 'Los Beltran'!"). Cruz’s manager later revealed that she never missed an episode of "Los Beltran" and had the show recorded while on tour.
Alvarez is fluent in both English and Spanish.
She is trained in karate and enjoys traveling, with Paris, Prague, and New Orleans among her favorite destinations.
Awards and Recognition "Los Beltran" won the 2001 Imagen Foundation Award for Best Comedy Series and the 2001 ALMA Award from the National Council of La Raza for Best Spanish Language Comedy Series. It was also nominated for two GLAAD Media Awards, becoming the first Spanish-language program honored by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
