Georgie was born in Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute, on April 20th, 1956. As a child, she showed little interest in participating in school plays. Instead, she pursued graphic design at the Glasgow School of Art and later moved to London in her mid-twenties to design book covers for Thames and Hudson publishing. Seeking new interests, she joined Floodlight Council, an organization aimed at developing adults' artistic talents, and then became a member of the Questors Theatre Company in Ealing, West London. There, she met the late Alan Rickman, who, like Georgie, had a background in design before acting, and he encouraged her to pursue her acting dreams. Consequently, she enrolled at the Bristol Old Vic drama school alongside Mark Strong and Jeremy Northam. After graduating, her first role was at the Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich. Even then, she modestly believed she lacked the looks for leading roles, but since her television debut in 1988, she has been a dependable supporting actress across a wide array of productions, from sketch comedy to period dramas. Notable performances include the determined Sergeant Nokes in Heartbeat (1992) and the warm, progressive teacher Audrey in Waterloo Road (2006), which was filmed in her native Scotland. She is regarded as one of the foremost character actresses. Though her film roles have typically supported bigger names, she has consistently been a standout performer, such as one of the spirited Calendar Girls (2003) and a woman enjoying pelvic massage in the Victorian-era comedy Hysteria (2011).
