He received a bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis and master's degrees in journalism and international affairs from Columbia University. He worked for the Associated Press in the US, and then joined United Press International in its Moscow bureau. The Washington Post recruited him in 1970, and he served as Canada correspondent, among other assignments. He later served as Beijing correspondent for U.S. News & World Report.
