Biografia
Carl is an internationally recognized filmmaker, photographer, musician, and designer. He works as a producer, writer, and director, having created over 30 documentaries for broadcast television, including one nominated for a RTS award. He has also directed acclaimed short films.
He directed the feature film Sometimes Always Never (2018), starring Bill Nighy, which premiered at the BFI London Film Festival. The film received critical praise across the UK, Australia, and the USA, earning rave reviews from the LA Times, Washington Post, and the New Yorker. In 2020, he directed the award-winning short film More Than Time.
Carl produced and co-wrote the BBC/Warp/Pathe feature Grow Your Own (2007), featuring Olivia Colman. His short film A Day in the Life - Twenty Four Zero Hours (2017), written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, was commissioned by the Liverpool Culture Company as one of thirteen reinterpretations of tracks from the iconic Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Beatles officially approved the film, showcasing it on their website and Twitter—the first time they have endorsed a third-party project.
A Winter's Tale: Shakespeare Lives (2016), another short film penned by Frank Cottrell Boyce, was commissioned by the British Council as part of Shakespeare Lives 2016, a global program celebrating William Shakespeare’s legacy on the 400th anniversary of his death.
His 1998 short fictional film Unloveable, about a fan of The Smiths, was exhibited at the Manchester Art Gallery for two years.
As a photographer, Carl’s Polaroids for Frank Cottrell Boyce’s novella The Unforgotten Coat won the Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis, Europe’s largest children’s literature award, as well as the Guardian Children’s Literature Prize. He has an exhibition scheduled to open in late 2022.
As a musician, he has recorded and toured with Liverpool pop band The Farm, contributing to numerous hit singles and albums—including chart-topping records in Britain, Europe, and the USA—and has also designed their artwork.
