Veteran actor Kevin L. Johnson is known for his work in both television and film, most notably for his role as Sam Dermody in Netflix’s acclaimed series "Ozark," starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. Initially cast for just two episodes in the first season, Johnson’s character Sam returned in every subsequent season, including the fourth and final one. He will soon appear as Eric in Netflix’s "Florida Man," executive produced by Bateman, and will guest star in the popular cult series "Stranger Things."
Johnson discovered his passion for acting while attending Clemson University. For an English major assignment, he saw the production "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," which inspired him to enroll in acting classes the following semester. After some formal training helped him overcome his introverted nature, Johnson gained the confidence to audition for his first role at Clemson. Although he didn’t get the part, he joined the tech crew to deepen his understanding of production.
Soon after, Johnson landed the lead role of Sam, a pickle maker looking for love, in "Crossing Delancey" at Clemson Little Theatre. He also portrayed Oswald in a Shakespeare in the Park production of "King Lear." His other theatre credits include Willy Wonka in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" at Easley Foothills Playhouse, Bardolph in "Henry V" at Brooks Theater, and Wally in "1940’s Radio Hour" at Clemson Little Theatre. During college auditions, Johnson also discovered his singing ability. Though his mother was a country singer, he hadn’t tested his own voice until preparing for an audition by listening to the "Urinetown" cast recording.
Kevin graduated from Clemson University with a degree in English and a minor in advertising before securing an agent. He began booking commercials, including campaigns for the North Carolina State Lottery and Burger King, as well as numerous short films. His first television role was on the hit series "One Tree Hill," an audition he nearly skipped. He went on to secure his first film role in "My Redneck Roots" and his first leading role in "Destiny Road."
Johnson’s extensive resume features numerous TV and film roles. His television credits include Cinemax’s "Banshee," CBS’ "Reckless," MTV’s "Finding Carter," FOX’s "The Resident," and OWN’s "Greenleaf" and "If Loving You Is Wrong." His film work includes "Prisoners" opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, "Careful What You Wish For" with Nick Jonas, "American Animals" alongside Evan Peters, and "Blue Ridge" opposite Johnathon Schaech.
