On Friday, August 5, the Lakers and Angels lost their biggest fan. Richard Roat, one of the most supportive friends anyone in the entertainment industry could have, passed away suddenly. Richard appeared in over 135 roles across television, film, and Broadway. He guest-starred twice on "The Golden Girls," first as a Murder Mystery Host and later as Betty White's boyfriend, only to be found dead in her bed the next morning. His credits include appearances on "Friends," "Seinfeld," "Hill Street Blues," and numerous other shows dating back to "Car 54 Where Are You?" Richard's Broadway performances included "Sunday in New York," "Any Wednesday," and "The Wall." He also performed at The Public Theatre in Central Park ("Julius Caesar"), The Huntington Hartford Theatre in Los Angeles ("Boys in the Band"), and the Pasadena Playhouse ("Moon Over Buffalo"). Beyond acting, Richard maintained a successful entertainment tax preparation practice for over 50 years. A true Renaissance Man, he loved music—especially playing the violin—along with theatre, movies, literature, stimulating conversation, and a fine whiskey. A passionate sports fan, Richard would have been thrilled by the Angels’ victory on the night he passed. Known for his dazzling smile and mischievous sparkle in his eyes, he delighted in playful banter with everyone. His deepest love was for his family, with whom he shared his sharp wit, intelligence, and boundless enthusiasm for life. Richard was blessed to marry his soulmate, Kathy, with whom he recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Their life together was a magical journey filled with travel, joy, laughter, and love—truly "An Affair to Remember." Richard will be dearly missed by family, friends, colleagues, and clients alike. He will be fondly remembered with warm thoughts and quiet smiles for all the joy he brought into our lives.
