Ben F. Wilson, a prolific actor and director of the silent film era, was born on July 7, 1876, in Corning, New York. His acting career began like many of his contemporaries—within a theatrical stock company performing on East Coast circuits.
Originally, Fort Lee, New Jersey, was considered the first "Hollywood," largely because Thomas Edison, the inventor of motion picture cameras and projection equipment, lived there. Edison himself produced the first films and soon combined his patents with others to form the Motion Picture Trust. This Trust essentially confined movie production to New Jersey and the New York City area around the turn of the 20th century, allowing Edison to closely monitor and profit from the use of his equipment.
Wilson started his film career working for Thomas Edison. Credited as "Benjamin Wilson," he debuted in Edwin S. Porter’s Silver Threads Among the Gold (1911) for the Edison Company. Between 1911 and 1913, he appeared in 13 films directed by J. Searle Dawley, including The Priest and the Man (1913), the first film adaptation of a work by Canadian novelist Gilbert Parker. Wilson directed himself for the first time in A Shot in the Dark (1912). He went on to direct 88 films in which he also acted, mainly during 1915-16. After leaving Edison, he joined the Nestor Company and eventually launched his own production outfit, securing a distribution agreement with Universal Film Manufacturing Company, which remained based on the East Coast. By 1916, Wilson’s popularity as an actor earned him a trading card from Piedmont Cigarettes, alongside stars like Florence Lawrence, E.K. Lincoln, and Pearl White. The following year, Egyptian Oasis cigarettes issued a card featuring Wilson with other notable actors such as King Baggot, Sidney Drew, Mrs. Sidney Drew, Marshall Neilan, and Anna Q. Nilsson. In 1918, Wilson reconnected with Universal as a producer, creating and directing the 18-part action-adventure serial The Brass Bullet. He also served on the board of the Motion Picture Directors' Association of America, an organization founded in 1915 by J. Searle Dawley and others to advocate for film directors.
Over his career, Wilson acted in 168 films, directed 123, produced 69, and wrote 11 screenplays. However, by the late 1920s, he was relegated to producing low-budget films for Poverty Row studios, working with Morris R. Schlank Productions until 1930. Wilson transitioned to sound films solely as an actor, with his final role in the Buck Jones western Shadow Ranch (1930) for Columbia Pictures, his only talkie, released shortly before his career ended due to poor health.
Ben F. Wilson passed away from heart disease complications on August 25, 1930, in Glendale, California, at the age of 54.
