Igor Gorbachyov was a renowned Russian actor, celebrated for his portrayal of Chichikov in both stage and film adaptations of "Revizor" (The Inspector-General), based on Nikolay Gogol's novel.
Born Igor Olegovich Gorbachyov on October 20, 1927, in Leningrad, USSR (now St. Petersburg, Russia), his father worked as an engineer and his mother taught French literature. As a child, he survived the Siege of Leningrad during World War II. Following the war, he grappled with the psychological aftermath of the Nazi bombardments. Between 1944 and 1947, he studied psychology at Leningrad University, where he joined a student theatre group and earned acclaim for playing the lead in Gogol's "Revizor." He was then invited to transfer to the Institute of Theatre, Music, and Cinematography, graduating with honors in 1951. That year, he secured the lead role in the film adaptation of The Inspector-General (1952), which brought him widespread fame.
Gorbachyov enjoyed a distinguished stage career. From 1951 to 1954, he acted at the Bolshoi Drama Theatre (BDT) in Leningrad. From 1954 until 1992, he was a principal actor with the Pushkin Drama Theatre in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). There, he shared the stage with prominent actors such as Nikolay Cherkasov, Nikolai Simonov, Vasiliy Merkurev, Konstantin Skorobogatov, Yuriy Tolubeev, Galina Karelina, Aleksandr Borisov, Bruno Frejndlikh, Rem Lebedev, Vladimir Chestnokov, Vladimir Erenberg, Konstantin Adashevsky, Leonid Vivyen, Olga Lebzak, Nina Mamaeva, Lidiya Shtykan, Nina Urgant, Nikolay Marton, Ivan Dmitriev, Sergei Parshin, and other notable Russian performers.
From 1975 to 1992, Igor Gorbachyov served as Artistic Director of the Pushkin (Alexandrinsky) Drama Theatre in Leningrad (St. Petersburg). He received the USSR State Prize in 1973 for his theatrical achievements and was honored as People's Artist of the USSR in 1977. His accolades also included the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and numerous other Soviet state awards. Additionally, he was a professor at the Institute of Theatre, Music, and Cinematography in Leningrad, mentoring distinguished actors such as Aristarkh Livanov, Igor Livanov, Nikolay Fomenko, among others.
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1992, Gorbachyov faced conflicts with Anatoli Sobchak, then mayor of St. Petersburg, which led to his forced resignation from the Pushkin Drama Theatre. He suffered a heart attack shortly afterward. Upon recovery, he focused mainly on teaching and took on minor film roles. Igor Gorbachyov passed away from heart failure on February 19, 2003, in St. Petersburg. He was buried in the Necropolis of Masters of Art, "Literatorskie Mostki," at Volkovo Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Russia.
