Dan Savage is a writer, TV personality, and activist renowned for his political and social commentary, as well as his candid discussions about sex, love, and relationships.
His sex advice column, "Savage Love," is syndicated across newspapers and websites in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Savage serves as the Editorial Director of The Stranger, Seattle’s weekly alternative newspaper, and his work has appeared in outlets such as The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, GQ, Rolling Stone, The Onion, and Salon.com.
Savage has authored several books, including Savage Love; The Kid: What Happened When My Boyfriend and I Decided to Get Pregnant (winner of the PEN West Award for Creative Nonfiction and the Lambda Literary Award for Nonfiction); Skipping Towards Gomorrah: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Pursuit of Happiness in America; and The Commitment: Love, Sex, Marriage and My Family. His latest bestseller, American Savage, explores themes from marriage and parenting to the gay agenda, the Catholic Church, and sex education. Publisher’s Weekly praised him as "America’s most in-your-face sex columnist and gay rights activist" for his frank and open approach.
Beyond his writing, Savage has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, and The Colbert Report, contributed to Ira Glass’s This American Life, and been featured on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, and ABC’s 20/20. He is a popular speaker at colleges across the U.S. and Canada.
In September 2010, Savage and his husband, Terry Miller, created a YouTube video aimed at encouraging LGBT youth facing harassment. Motivated by a number of student suicides, they wanted to send a personal message that "it gets better." This initiative grew into the It Gets Better Project, a global movement with over 50,000 videos viewed more than 50 million times. The It Gets Better book, co-edited by Savage and Miller, was published in March 2011, followed by an MTV documentary special in February 2012.
Dan Savage was raised in Chicago and now resides in Seattle, Washington, with his husband Terry Miller and their son, DJ.
