Sagiroglu was born in 1932 in Trabzon, a small town on the Black Sea coast. Similar to Halit Refig, he was raised in Istanbul, bearing little connection to his hometown. He attended Galatasaray, a renowned French high school in Istanbul, where he was exposed to French film traditions. This influence of French culture and cinema later became evident in the poetry and lyricism of "Bitmeyen Yol" (The Never Ending Road, 1965). Sagiroglu also briefly studied architecture at Istanbul Technical University, which broadened his artistic perspective. Unlike many filmmakers of his time, he had a strong interest in theater and stage design, largely stemming from his architectural background. He began his artistic career as a stage designer at "Kucuk Sahne" (Small Stage Theater) and played an active role in founding The Association of Theater Players. Throughout the 1950s, he worked as a stage designer on several significant films by Atif Yilmaz and Memduh Un.
"Bitmeyen Yol," released in 1965, marked Sagiroglu's directorial debut and greatest success, representing the pinnacle of the Turkish social realist movement. The film portrays the struggles of migrant workers trying to adapt to life in Istanbul, serving as a culmination of his prior artistic experiences and challenges. Although occasionally criticized for its religious themes and complex narrative, "Bitmeyen Yol" successfully resolved the challenge faced by many social realist filmmakers between 1960-65: blending cultural modernism, socio-political commitment, and local traditional elements. Sagiroglu also wrote the film's script himself.
Following "Bitmeyen Yol," Sagiroglu directed "Ben Olurken Yasarim" (I Live as Long as I Die, 1966), starring Yilmaz Guney. During the intense debates between filmmakers and leftist critics in the late 1960s, Sagiroglu sided with the directors. His earlier detachment from Marxism and inclination toward religious mysticism led him to reject social realism and support the "popular" film theory championed mainly by Halit Refig. After directing several less notable films in the 1970s, Sagiroglu shifted his focus entirely to stage design. He earned numerous awards for his work on plays such as "Abelard and Heloise," "The Chronicle of a Mad Man," and "Hysteria" during the 1980s and 1990s. Like Metin Erksan and Halit Refig, he joined the faculty at Mimar Sinan University’s Department of Film. He continues to work as a stage designer and contributes to successful productions.
