Born on the island of Mauritius, she received her education in Paris and London.
Her film debut was in Loving Feeling (1968), directed by Norman Warren and produced by Bashoo Sen. She then appeared in There's a Girl in My Soup (1970) alongside Peter Sellers, playing the role of Paola. While dining with her partner at the time, Richard Johnson, at the White Elephant in Mayfair, she was spotted by Kirk Douglas, who offered her the lead in Skallawag. She declined, choosing instead to star in Jean Rollin's The Iron Rose (1973). In 1971, a fire broke out at her friend Vivianne Ventura's home, causing her to fall from the third floor and land on railings, resulting in a broken arm and a dislocated shoulder.
Her 11-year relationship with renowned actor Richard Johnson ended in 1980; they had a son, Nicholas, born in 1976. She made her television debut in October 1971 on Coronation Street, playing Ray Langton’s friend, paving the way for other actresses in the soap. She went on to appear in numerous guest roles, including performances with Rex Harrison in Don Quixote, Lee Remick in Tennessee Williams' Summer & Smoke, as well as Terry & June and Giants & Ogres for Granada. While working on the Thames TV sitcom Rule Britannia, written by Vince Powell, she met Powell, who later wrote the role of Danielle Favre in Mind Your Language (1977) specifically for her. She starred in Mind Your Language for three years before returning to the stage in Happy Birthday, reuniting with Fraser Hines, and also performed in the pantomime Aladdin.
In 1982, she moved to the United States, where she secured a two-year contract and acted in productions such as The Young & The Restless, Gavilan, My Man Adam, Lightning, and The White Stallion (1986). She earned acclaim for her portrayals of Olivia in Twelfth Night and Rosalind in As You Like It. She returned to London in 1987 to be with her son. Since then, she has been active in charity work and was set to co-star in her first film in 20 years in 2011.
