Biografia
Moritz de Hadeln began his career as a photographer and documentary filmmaker before serving as director of the Nyon International Documentary Film Festival from 1969 to 1979, the Locarno International Film Festival from 1972 to 1979, and the Berlin International Film Festival from 1979 to 2001. He later directed the Venice International Film Festival in 2002 and 2003 and was Program Director of the newly established Montreal International Film Festival in 2005.
Born in 1940 in Exeter, England, de Hadeln’s European heritage gave him a distinctive artistic education. His grandfather, Detlev Freiherr von Hadeln (1878-1935), was a noted art historian specializing in Venetian Renaissance art; his father, Harry, founded an art edition company in Florence, Italy; and his mother, Alexandra Balaceano (1911–1977), was a respected sculptor and painter. After working as a freelance photographer, de Hadeln directed his first documentary, "Le Pèlé" (1963), produced by the Swiss company Teleproduction in Zurich, followed by several years collaborating with cinematographer Ernest Artaria.
In 1967, he directed his second film, "Ombres et Mirages," while also working as a film editor in Zurich alongside Yves Allegret and as an assistant director at CCC Film Studios in Berlin. In 1969, Moritz and his wife Erika founded the Nyon International Documentary Film Festival in Switzerland, which he led until 1979. Erika then took over as head of the festival from 1980 to 1994, with Moritz supporting her. Together, over 25 years, they transformed Nyon into a distinctive hub for documentary filmmaking, helping to uncover numerous emerging talents. Between 1972 and 1977, de Hadeln directed the Locarno International Film Festival, ushering in a new era of international acclaim. He introduced the innovative outdoor screenings on the Piazza Grande and multiple side events to enhance the festival’s global reach.
In 1979, de Hadeln was appointed director of the Berlin International Film Festival, where he established the event as one of the world's most well-organized festivals. Despite the Cold War tensions in the divided city during the early 1980s, he successfully united East and West through the festival. Alongside Beki Probst, he co-founded the European Film Market. A dedicated global traveler, de Hadeln was among the first to recognize the rise of Chinese cinema. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and German reunification, he capitalized on the opportunity to elevate the festival as a premier event in the newly unified German capital. After years of meticulous planning, in 2000, he oversaw the festival’s relocation to the newly redeveloped Potsdamer Platz, the city’s historic center, and rebranded the festival with a fresh corporate identity.
In May 2001, Moritz and Erika de Hadeln established "de Hadeln & Partners" in Berlin, a company specializing in film consulting and event management.
In March 2002, de Hadeln became the first non-Italian to direct the Venice International Film Festival (Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica), part of the Venice Biennale. He led the festival in 2002 and 2003, during which he sought to preserve its independence from external pressures while modernizing its organizational structure and enhancing its international prestige.
In early 2005, he was appointed Program Director of the new Montreal International Film Festival, an initiative supported by both the federal and Quebec governments. The inaugural and only edition took place from September 18 to 25, 2005. Despite the limited preparation time, de Hadeln and his team organized a program featuring over 22 world premieres. However, poor local management ultimately led to the event’s discontinuation.
Throughout their careers, Moritz and Erika de Hadeln curated numerous significant retrospectives at the Nyon, Locarno, and Berlin festivals, including "The Uzbek Cinema" (1971), "The New Indian Cinema" (1972), "Canadian 'Cinema-direct' 1958-1972" (1976), "The 'March of Time' Newsreels" (1978), "Drew Associates 1960-1969" (1981), "Selling Switzerland - Marketing Guillaume Tell" (1984), "Swiss Army Film Unit" (1985), "Panorama of Southeast Asian Cinema" (1980), and, in collaboration with Hans-Joachim Schlegel, "Documentary Films of the Baltic Soviet Republics" (1987/88), "Documentary Films of the Armenian Soviet Republic" (1989/90), and "Romania: The Documentary Films 1898-1990" (1990/91).
Moritz de Hadeln holds the rank of Commander in the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture (1986), Commander in the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (1988), and Officer in the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (2000). His honors include the Pro Cultura Hungarica medal (1986), the Silver Medal of Slovak Cinematography (1986), the European Film Forum Prize in Strasbourg as a tribute to an outstanding festival director (2000), the honorary medal from the Russian Ministry of Culture (2001), the Gay Teddy Bear award (2001), and, alongside Erika, an honorary FIPRESCI prize, an honorary Ecumenical Jury prize (2001), and the Armenian Filmmakers Union ANAHIT Award (2006) recognizing their significant efforts in promoting Armenian cinema internationally. He also received honorary diplomas of appreciation at the 20th Fajr International Film Festival in Tehran (2002) and the Damascus International Film Festival in Syria (2003).
An author of various publications, de Hadeln has served on numerous international juries, including at festivals in Karlovy Vary, Venice, Moscow, Montreal, Torino, Tehran, Damascus, and Yerevan. He is a member of the European Film Academy (EFA). A Swiss citizen since 1986, Moritz de Hadeln currently lives in Berlin, Germany, and Gland, Switzerland.
