Stefanos Stratigos was a renowned and cherished actor in Greek theater and cinema. Often cast as "tough" and "ruthless" characters due to his appearance, critics believed his talent could have supported more complex roles on screen. Born in Athens in 1923 into a theatrical family, his parents, Vasilis and Amalia, were prominent performers during the interwar period, touring Greece and performing in even the smallest villages by setting up makeshift stages in cafes to entertain locals and earn a living. His three younger sisters, Aleka (1926-1989), Rena (1929-2014), and Stella (1931-2005), also pursued acting careers. Raised in the theater environment, Stratigos was introduced to acting early on. Unlike his parents, he pursued formal training at the Drama School of the Royal Theater, graduating in 1944. He joined major troupes such as those led by Vasilis Logothetidis, with whom he appeared in numerous theater and film productions, as well as working alongside Ellie Lambeti, Dimitris Horn, Dinos Iliopoulos, and Vasilis Argyropoulos. He also formed his own companies, managing or co-managing them with colleagues, including Gely Mavropoulou, with whom he shared both a stage partnership and a personal relationship. After their separation, he married actress Mari Pantazi. His theater career extended into the mid-1980s, collaborating with notable actors like Dionysis Papagiannopoulos, Nikos Xanthopoulos, and Thanasis Vengos on tours throughout Greece and abroad. Beyond theater, Stratigos had an extensive film career, debuting in Alekos Sakellarios's 1948 film Oi Germanoi xanarhontai... alongside Vasilis Logothetidis. His notable film roles include To koritsi tis tavernas (1952), Santa Chikita (1953), The Magic City (1954), A Girl in Black (1956), The Auntie from Chicago (1957), Dellistavrou kai Yios (1957), Murder in Kolonaki (1959), The Wise Guy (1962), The Scum (1963), Papaflessas (1971), and O anthropos me to garyfallo (1980). In the early 1960s, he also directed, achieving success with the comedy Etairia thavmaton (1962). Stratigos retired from acting in the early 1990s, with his final appearances in Thanasis Skroubelos' film O Tzonys Keln, kyria mou (1991) and Marios Retsilas's drama series Anatolikos anemos (1992), aired on ANT1. Stefanos Stratigos passed away on April 6, 2006, at Athens’ Red Cross Hospital, due to a respiratory infection, according to medical reports.
