Heinz Erhardt, a versatile comedian, pianist, singer, and homespun poet, was born in Riga to a successful bandmaster. After his parents separated, he experienced a somewhat unsettled childhood, living alternately with his mother in St. Petersburg, his grandparents in Riga, and his father in Hannover. Having changed schools about fifteen times, he eventually completed his education—though without matriculating—and began musical studies at the Leipzig Conservatory under the renowned concert pianist and teacher Professor Robert Teichmüller. He briefly worked as a piano salesman but soon focused on performing, playing piano and appearing as a cabaret artist and stand-up comic in cafés and on radio in Danzig. His official stage debut came in 1932 at the Riga Schauspielhaus in a play for which he also composed the music. Following several years of financial struggle while supporting his wife and four children, he was invited in 1938 by actor and emcee Willi Schaeffers to join the popular satirical revue Kabarett der Komiker in Berlin. Erhardt quickly gained a unique reputation as a humorist while continuing his musical pursuits. Despite not being a swimmer, he served as a pianist with the German Navy orchestra during World War II.
After the war, he returned to the stage in Hamburg and achieved nationwide success as the host of a weekly radio show ("So was Dummes") that showcased his talent for spontaneous humor, pun-filled poetry, and double entendres. Eventually, he moved into film, initially taking minor supporting roles or parts as a singing pianist. As his radio popularity soared, the bespectacled, cherubic, and portly Erhardt became a beloved film star. His leading role debut in Der müde Theodor (1957) was a box-office hit, followed by another success in Widower with 5 Daughters (1957). Comparable to Hollywood’s S.Z. Sakall, Erhardt often mocked bourgeois values and philistine concerns, rendering even his most irksome characters, like Paul Perlacher in Der Haustyrann (1959), endearing rather than off-putting.
To break free from being typecast as a comedian, Erhardt founded his own television production company in 1961, though it lasted only two years. The public remained reluctant to accept him in any role other than comedy. After this setback, he returned to television in his familiar comic roles, including a recurring character as the well-meaning but hapless tax officer Willi Winzig. He also published several bestselling collections of his comic poetry and enjoyed strong sales of recordings from his live performances. Unfortunately, in December 1971, Erhardt suffered a paralyzing stroke that left him unable to speak, effectively ending his career. He passed away eight years later in Hamburg at age seventy, six months after receiving Germany’s highest honor, the Bundesverdienstkreuz (Federal Cross of Merit).
