Waldemar Kalinowski's most recent work includes designing Miller Bros.' "Sweetwater" and the Irish/Swedish film "Life's A Breeze," directed by Lance Daly. He designed the pilot episode of HBO's "Treme," directed by Agnieszka Holland. His credits also include "Courageous Heart Of Irena Sendler" directed by John Harrison and "Crazy Heart" by writer/director Scott Cooper. In 2007, he completed Ed Harris' western "Appaloosa" and the award-winning Irish film "Kisses," also directed by Lance Daly. Earlier, he collaborated with Andy Garcia on "The Lost City," set during the Cuban Revolution. Other projects include HBO's "Path to War," John Frankenheimer's final film, "Stigmata" directed by Rupert Wainwright, "Dance With Me," and "Wrestling Ernest Hemingway" directed by Randa Haines. He has worked on five films with director Mike Figgis: "Leaving Las Vegas," "One Night Stand," "Mr. Jones," "Liebestraum," and "Internal Affairs." Early in his career, he designed Clare Peploe's "Rough Magic," Harold Becker's "The Boost," and Victor Salva's "Powder."
In addition to feature films, Kalinowski has designed music videos, commercials, television projects, and stage installations.
Born in Austria and raised in Warsaw, Poland, Kalinowski studied physics and mathematics at the University of Warsaw. He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from CalArts in California.
His diverse career includes a 1969 research project for the first Lunar Lander, a series of performance-video installations in the mid-1970s, seven years as a fashion and advertising photographer, and an ongoing acting career that began with a role in the 1978 film "Heaven's Gate."
His wife, Florence Fellman, an art historian with a master's degree in 19th and 20th-century European art, is his closest collaborator. Since 1984, they have worked together as a production designer and set decorator team on most of Kalinowski's projects. They have two children: daughter Alexandra Paloma, a singer/songwriter based in New York, and son Ariel Bonaventura, an artist and poet also living in New York.
