Hans Weingartner's debut film made a powerful impact on the German film scene: shot guerrilla-style with just an eight-person crew, "Das weiße Rauschen" ("The White Noise") swept every major award for a debut film in Germany. This breakthrough launched him among Germany’s top directors and transformed lead actor Daniel Brühl into a star. Brühl won his first "Lola" (the German Academy Award) for his intense portrayal of a young man with schizophrenia, finally earning his skeptical father's approval, who after the premiere simply said, "Okay, my son, you can be an actor."
