Charles Mesure was born on Wednesday, August 12, 1970, in Somerset, England. At the age of five, his family relocated to Australia, where he was raised in Sydney.
He pursued law at Sydney University and was heavily involved in SUDS, the university's dramatic society. He also sang tenor in an a cappella group called Cinco. After graduating from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney in 1995, he moved to New Zealand, quickly landing his first television role on "City Life." He also performed in plays at the Court and Circa theatres. In 2003, he earned the Best Supporting Actor award for his portrayal of DSS Kees Van Dam on "Street Legal."
In 2004, he relocated to the United States, appearing in guest roles on several popular series, including 12 episodes of "Crossing Jordan" (notably the 100th episode) and two episodes of "Without a Trace," both featuring him in season-ending cliffhangers.
He returned to New Zealand in 2008 for major roles in three series. He was nominated for Best Actor in the TV Guide "Best on the Box" People's Choice Awards for his recurring role as Detective Sergeant Zane Gerard on "Outrageous Fortune," a character involved in the biggest cliffhanger in New Zealand television history. The second series, the award-winning family adventure "Kaitangata Twitch," featured Charles as father Carey Gallagher and concluded its 13-episode run in July 2010. That same month, the complex mystery "This Is Not My Life" premiered with Charles starring as Alec Ross, a man who suspects his seemingly perfect family and life are not genuine.
Charles returned to the U.S. in 2009, securing the recurring role of mercenary Kyle Hobbes on "V." He was a regular during the second season, which ended in March 2011.
In July 2011, Charles was cast as Ben Faulkner in the eighth and final season of "Desperate Housewives." Ben, an Australian self-made construction millionaire who was both charming and ruthless, moved to Wisteria Lane and quickly became the love interest of Renee Perry. In the series finale, Ben and Renee were married.
In 2013, Charles traveled to South Africa to portray a drunken American playboy in "Marple: A Caribbean Mystery," adapted from Agatha Christie's novel, and went to Miami for a final-season episode of "Burn Notice," playing a criminal computer expert.
In January 2014, Charles filmed an action role for an episode of "The Mentalist." Immediately after, he flew to Vancouver to portray Blackbeard in "Once Upon a Time," sharing scenes with Colin O'Donoghue's Captain Hook. On Twitter, he described Blackbeard's costume as the coolest he had ever worn.
