Mark E. Swinton is an American writer, director, and producer with a diverse portfolio spanning theater, television, and film. His roots are in live theater, later expanding into network television and studio production.
Throughout his career, Swinton has written and directed over 300 prime time television episodes and produced nearly 1,500 episodes across major networks. His TV credits include Sistas, The Oval, Ruthless, House of Payne, All the Queen’s Men, Assisted Living, Zatima, For Better or Worse, Young Dylan, The Paynes, Too Close to Home, The Haves and the Have Nots, Bruh, If Loving You Is Wrong, Caught Up, and The Michael Blackson Show, among others.
In film, his producing work features titles such as Nobody’s Fool, Acrimony, A Fall from Grace, A Madea Homecoming, Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, A Madea Family Funeral, and Boo! A Madea Halloween.
Swinton dedicated over 18 years as a senior executive at Tyler Perry Studios, serving as Senior Vice President and significantly contributing to the growth of the studio’s television and live production projects. He also produced multiple national tours of Tyler Perry’s stage plays during this tenure.
Beginning his career in live theater as a playwright and director, Swinton gained acclaim for original works including Ephraim’s Song, What’s Going On, Autumn, Keep Moving On, Black Olive, and Sugarbread Sweet. His directing credits on stage encompass Dreamgirls, Fences, The Wiz, A Raisin in the Sun, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, and The Piano Lesson.
He is the creator, writer, director, and executive producer of the limited series Route 187, set to debut in 2026 on Paramount Network.
Swinton earned a Bachelor of Arts from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and began his professional journey as an educator in Los Angeles, where he led a theater arts and film program distinguished for excellence.
