She grew up in the countryside and spent her youth there. In 1936, she trained as a pilot in Berlin. Alongside her passion for flying, she already displayed strong ambitions for emancipation and a marked defiance of social norms. Initially, as a pilot, she participated in German Air Force exercises and also worked testing new aircraft for Flugzeugwerke Friedrich in Strausberg. In 1939, she married her flight instructor Hans-Jürgen Uhse, adopting his surname, and they had a child who passed away from cancer in 1984. During World War II, she transported fighter-bombers to the front lines. A year before the war ended, she survived a serious plane crash, while her husband was killed in combat. After the war and her time in British captivity, the widowed woman supported herself as a farm worker and traveling salesperson in Schleswig-Holstein. Through her many interactions with rural customers, she developed a deep understanding of the personal challenges faced by rural women.
Beginning with the creation and distribution of free educational brochures, Uhse launched her first commercial educational campaign in Flensburg in 1946, laying the groundwork for her future business ventures. She sold the "Schrift X," which had sold 32,000 copies by 1947. She advised women on contraceptive methods mainly based on calculating infertile days. Her contraception guide was highly sought after by young couples in the post-war years due to widespread unwanted pregnancies. In 1949, Uhse married Flensburg businessman Ernst-Walter Rotermund, with whom she had another child; they separated in 1972. In 1950, she registered the "Beate Uhse" mail order company in Flensburg. Throughout the 1950s, she expanded her small shipping business into a flourishing trading company by broadening her product range.
Her success stemmed from the idea of removing erotic merchandise from taboo and making it accessible to the general public through reliable information and discreet shipping. By branding her "marital hygiene products" from the start, Uhse gave mail order sales a personal and professional image that built customer trust. This was evident in the many letters the company received, which Uhse initially answered herself before passing inquiries to a physician. However, sending condoms to unmarried couples soon clashed with the 1950s moral laws, particularly Section 184 of the Criminal Code, in force since 1919, which criminalized extramarital sex and aiding it. For decades, Uhse's company faced investigations, house searches, and publication bans on its catalogs until the laws were liberalized in 1975. Despite opposition from politicians and the church, Uhse advocated for the relaxation of moral regulations in Germany.
Despite resistance, the mail order business reached one million DM in sales by 1956. In 1962, she opened the world’s first sex shop, named the "specialist shop for marital hygiene," in Flensburg. Demand for sex products was so high that a chain of stores quickly followed. After divorcing Rotermund, Uhse married John Holland in 1972. In 1974, the company became GmbH & Co. KG, and in 1978, it transitioned into a corporation. Uhse continuously introduced new business ideas, including launching a film rental company in 1978. She acquired smaller competitors, and the company continued to grow. By 1981, the group had become a stock corporation operating 12 "Blue Movie" cinemas, establishing itself as a market leader in the pornographic film industry. This success drew sharp criticism from the women's movement, which condemned the porn industry for its sexist and misogynistic aspects. Nonetheless, Uhse's mail order business grew to become the largest of its kind.
Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, her stores rapidly expanded across the new federal states. In the 1990s, media outlets increasingly recognized the dynamic businesswoman, who stepped back from direct management in 1992 to serve on the company’s supervisory board. In 1996, Uhse celebrated her 50th business anniversary, and the "Beate Uhse Erotic Museum" opened in Berlin. Her contributions were acknowledged not only commercially but also for advancing sexual education in post-war German society. In 1999, a public memorial plaque was unveiled in Flensburg in her honor. Additionally, the Beate Uhse Women Entrepreneurs Award was established to recognize women who demonstrate courage, assertiveness, creativity, business acumen, social commitment, and leadership.
Meanwhile, Uhse's company embraced the latest technology, distributing erotic products increasingly via telephone, BTX, and the Internet. As new media expanded, the company's online presence grew, acquiring the "Aktuelle Information" (AI) group for this sector. All websites were designed to meet customer needs. The company also expanded internationally, founding branches and subsidiaries in Scandinavia and expanding its publishing business to Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. In the Netherlands, it acquired majority shares in other erotic providers. The company went public in 1999.
