Biografia
Georgi Hristov Danailov was born on January 1, 1936, in Sofia, descending from a notable family. He is the grandson of Academic Professor Georgi Todorov Danailov. In 1950, his family was relocated to Svishtov. He completed high school in Pleven in 1953 and earned a Master's degree in Chemistry and Physics from Sofia University in 1958. Danailov worked as a chemistry teacher and later as chief of a factory laboratory in Svishtov. From 1963 to 1976, he served as an assistant at the Department of Organic and General Chemistry at the Chemistry Institute in Sofia. In 1976, he transitioned to a career as a playwright at the "Tears and Laughter" theater.
Danailov has been involved in literature since his student years. His earliest publications appeared in 1960 in the newspapers "People's Youth" and "Evening News." He also contributed scientific popular articles to magazines such as "Science and Technology," "Space," and newspapers including "Orbit" and "View." He authored scientific papers on chemistry published both in Bulgaria and internationally. His first play premiered in 1975.
As a playwright, novelist, and scriptwriter, Danailov is among Bulgaria's most prolific and popular artists. His works often address contemporary themes, categorized as the "Dramaturgy of everyday life." His writing frequently draws inspiration from current events, using them to make significant social observations. The narratives typically explore the psychological and social behaviors of characters who are unconventional protagonists. These characters defend their truths through intellect, sharp remarks, irony, and humor rather than traditional heroic means.
Danailov's success lies in his skillful creation of light, lively, and witty dialogue combined with dynamic storylines that blend realism and satirical comedy. His interest in personal motivation remains evident even in his historical plays, which are grounded in documentary sources. Works like the play "Mr. Balkanski" and the book "To Chicago and Back – One Hundred Years Later" showcase his keen examination of enduring national psychological traits, mixing sharp social critique with self-irony.
He has written scripts for films such as "Children Play Out," "If Anyone," "Surgeons," "Carnival," "Where Are You Traveling?," "Which Way Now" (co-written with director Rangel Vulchanov), and "The Camp" (co-written with director Georgi Djulgerov). His books and plays have been translated into Armenian, Russian, German, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, and Czech. Danailov’s plays have been staged in cities including Moscow, Leningrad, Ceske Budejovice, Brno, Bratislava, Warsaw, Tbilisi, and Yerevan.
He has received numerous international awards for film, literature, and theater. In 1997, he won the international "Rousseau" contest in Paris, selected from 566 candidates across 30 countries. Danailov is an Honorary Citizen of Svishtov, recognized for his significant contributions to the city and Bulgaria. He received the Apollo Toksoforos Apollonia statuette in 2002 for his longstanding influence on Bulgarian literature and international success. Additionally, he was awarded the Sofia Award in 2002 and the "Mihaylovski" Award in 2003.
