Jevon Whetter is the writer, director, and producer of the feature film Flash Before the Bang. A Deaf filmmaker, producer, writer, director, and American Sign Language (ASL) consultant, he is recognized for crafting authentic, character-driven stories that bridge Deaf and hearing audiences and advance inclusive storytelling across film and television.
Raised in a multi-generational Deaf family, Whetter grew up immersed in Deaf culture and American Sign Language from birth. Introduced to the visual language of silent films at an early age, he developed a lifelong fascination with visual storytelling, discovering how powerful emotion, character, and narrative could be conveyed without spoken dialogue. Those early influences continue to shape his cinematic style and creative vision.
Whetter earned a Master of Fine Arts in Producing from the American Film Institute Conservatory and a Master of Arts in Theatre Arts from San Diego State University. His artistic foundation was further shaped through his work with the acclaimed National Theatre of the Deaf, where he deepened his understanding of performance, visual expression, ensemble collaboration, and actor-centered storytelling. Together, these experiences have profoundly influenced his directing style, emphasizing authentic performances, emotional truth, and compelling visual narratives.
Beyond directing and producing, Whetter has collaborated with major studios and production companies as an ASL and Deaf culture consultant, helping filmmakers authentically portray Deaf characters, American Sign Language, and Deaf culture. He has also been invited to speak and serve on industry panels on accessibility, authentic representation, and the future of inclusive storytelling.
Known for his collaborative leadership and ability to unite Deaf and hearing artists, Whetter is passionate about creating films that entertain broad audiences while expanding opportunities for underrepresented voices.
