Jasmin St. Claire rose to prominence as "America's Most Controversial Sex Symbol" through her roles in the best-selling adult films of the late 1990s. She cultivated a rebellious rock star persona that often shocked the adult industry. Known for her sharp wit and self-deprecating humor about her porn fame, she became a highly rated guest on Howard Stern’s radio show and related E! Entertainment broadcasts. St. Claire’s mainstream acting debut included notable comedic parts in Communication Breakdown and National Lampoon Dorm Daze 2. More recently, while training at Bill O'Leary's Acting Workshop, she shifted toward dramatic roles in thrillers such as Angel of Reckoning and the acclaimed sci-fi drama Trial Run. Often cast in ethnically ambiguous roles or as Italian or Middle Eastern, St. Claire identifies as Latina, reflecting her mixed Northern European and Brazilian heritage.
Her background contrasts sharply with her early adult film career. Born Rhea De Vlugt in the U.S. Virgin Islands, her Dutch father ran a food distribution business, and her mother, a U.S.-educated lawyer, hailed from Brazil. Raised on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, she attended Lycée Français and McBurney School, alma mater to Henry Winkler and J.D. Salinger. Graduating from Brooklyn Friends School at 16, she earned honors for her involvement in the pioneering "Art without Walls" tutoring program for inner-city youth. After graduating from Columbia University, St. Claire worked as a financial consultant at S. G. Warburg, then part of Swiss Bank. During a physically abusive relationship with a prominent Manhattan lawyer—whom she later named in a Howard Stern interview—she secretly performed as a topless dancer at Manhattan’s notorious KitKat Club and later Flashdancers.
St. Claire entered the adult industry on a dare. Invited to appear on the Jerry Springer Show in a scripted role as a confrontational stripper, she created the larger-than-life “Jasmin St. Claire” persona. Her flair for theater and controversy propelled her rise in the adult film world. She stirred debate by calling most porn "disgusting and brainless," yet quickly surpassed Jenna Jameson as America’s top-selling porn star. In 1998, she became the first Latina to break the traditional blonde archetype by topping sales charts. Inducted into AVN’s Hall of Fame as one of the greatest porn stars ever, St. Claire was among the first adult performers featured as an action figure and starred in an adult comic book series. At her peak, she inspired critical essays by David Foster Wallace and Evan Wright and appeared as a character in Chuck Palahniuk’s novel Snuff. Despite the controversy, she spent only three years in the adult industry, appearing in just over two dozen films before retiring in 1999. Although she never filmed adult scenes again, compilations of her past work were re-released under new titles throughout the 2000s.
Pushing her boundaries further, St. Claire became a pro wrestler. In 1998, the Dudley Boyz invited her to participate in ECW’s Living Dangerously pay-per-view event. She trained under Sue Sexton and Mando Guerrero and later worked with wrestling legend Jimmy Lawler in Memphis Championship Wrestling, as well as in XWF and NWA-TNA. Often acting as a “manager” who would join wrestlers in the ring, she founded the upstart promotion 3PW, becoming the first female owner to operate and promote a wrestling league—five years before Stephanie McMahon took over WWE. She closed 3PW in 2005.
St. Claire also pursued a career as a heavy metal journalist and on-air personality, launching the Metals Darkside series in 2004, which she produced. Her passion for heavy metal began with a Black Sabbath concert at Madison Square Garden when she was nine. In 1998, she became the first female emcee of March Metal Meltdown in New Jersey, helping introduce Sepultura to North American audiences. Throughout the mid-2000s, she worked as a veejay for The Metal Scene TV Show, AOL Noisecreep, Inferno TV, and Stay Heavy TV, while contributing articles to Yahoo News and Guitar Player. She modeled for B.C. Rich Guitars, Coffin Case, and Krank Amplifiers and licensed her likeness for a Guitar Hero controller made by Peavey.
Returning to acting in 2014, St. Claire took on dramatic roles such as an FBI agent in Army of the Damned and a hardened street criminal in Grand Auto Theft. Continuing intensive Meisner training at the Ruskin School, she has recently appeared in significant roles in Daughters of Dolemite, Future Rich Wives Club, Angel of Reckoning, and Road to Tereztetto. She appeared in season three of HBO’s acclaimed series The Deuce and recently completed filming on 3 Days Rising. She featured in two award-winning films, AfterAdderall and Trial Run. An avid motorcycle enthusiast, she writes a monthly column for Sportsbikes Inc Magazine. Jasmin graduated from the Second City Conservatory’s prestigious Grad Revue program in Hollywood and completed the longform program at Upright Citizens Brigade. She currently performs her one-woman show, A Weird Kind of Fame, and hosts the podcast Krazy Train With Jasmin St Claire. She divides her time between Paris, Los Angeles, and New York. In April 2022, St. Claire returned to wrestling with XPW Wrestling.
