Vilma Degischer was primarily a renowned and highly skilled theatre actress. She was born in Vienna on November 17, 1911. Initially aspiring to be a dancer, she studied ballet under Grete Gross, Gertrude Bodenwieser, and Ellinor Tordis. However, she soon discovered her talent for acting.
She enrolled at the Wiener Reinhardt Seminar to hone her acting skills. After graduating, she performed in various Austrian and German theatres, particularly in Berlin, Vienna, and Salzburg. Notably, she made her Berlin debut in the 1930s as Hermia in Shakespeare's *A Midsummer Night's Dream*, directed by Max Reinhardt.
A significant milestone in her theatre career came in 1939 when she joined the Viennese theatre *Theater in der Josefstadt*. She remained there for many years and is still fondly remembered. Vilma became a "salondame" and took on numerous leading roles, including Helen in *Der Schwierige*, the Generalin in *Der Walzer der Toreros*, the unforgettable Queen in *Die Jüdin von Toledo*, Marie in *Das Konzert*, and Mother Carmen in *Maria Pineda*.
In the 1940s, Vilma Degischer expanded her repertoire to include musicals, films, and mini-series. Many recall her portrayal of the cruel Archduchess Sophie in Ernst Marischka’s *Sissi* trilogy (1955, 1956, 1957), starring Romy Schneider and Karlheinz Böhm. She also appeared as Livia Argan in Marischka’s adaptation of Franz Werfel’s *Der veruntreute Himmel* (1958), alongside Annie Rosar and Hans Holt; as Sister Wilhelmina in Otto Preminger’s *The Cardinal* (1963) with Romy Schneider; as Mrs. Shelby in *Uncle Tom’s Cabin* (1965); and in various other roles. Near the end of her life, she appeared in a minor role in the mini-series *The Strauss Dynasty* (1991), directed by Marvin J. Chomsky, featuring Anthony Higgins and Stephen McGann.
Vilma Degischer passed away on May 3, 1992, at the age of 80. She was married once to actor Hermann Thimig, with whom she had two daughters. Throughout her long career, she received the *Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst erster Klasse*, the *Kainz Medaille*, and was honored with the title *Kammerschauspielerin*.
