Biografia
Marteinn Thorsson, born in Reykjavik, Iceland, holds dual citizenship in Iceland and Canada. He earned a B.F.A. in Film Studies from Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, in 1993, debuting with the 65-minute film noir Diary of an Assassin.
In 2004, Marteinn co-wrote and co-directed the feature film One Point O (also known as 1.O or Paranoia: 1.O) alongside Jeff Renfroe. The film starred Jeremy Sisto, Deborah Kara Unger, Udo Kier, and Lance Henriksen.
One Point O was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, has been sold in over 43 countries worldwide, and received several international awards.
Variety Magazine included Marteinn on its 2004 list of 10 Directors To Watch.
His second feature, Rokland (Stormland), produced by Snorri Thorisson at Pegasus Pictures in Reykjavik, is based on the novel by Hallgrimur Helgason. The film was featured at festivals worldwide, with lead actors Olafur Darri Olafsson and Elma Lísa Gunnarsdóttir winning Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively at the 2011 Icelandic Edda Awards.
Marteinn’s third feature, the controversial XL, reunited him with Olafur Darri Olafsson and Elma Lísa Gunnarsdóttir. XL earned Best Actor at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and received 11 Edda Award nominations.
His upcoming projects include the supernatural thriller Recurrence (Una), produced by Gudrun Edda Thorhannesdottir of Duo Productions, and the coming-of-age drama Wild Summer, co-produced by Thorsson, Gudmundur Oskarsson, Christian Riffard (France), and Paola Sponda (Italy).
Marteinn has also written, directed, and edited award-winning promos for Astral Media's The Movie Network in Toronto. Additionally, he has directed and edited television programs for Icelandic Television, as well as music videos and commercials. He has taught screenwriting, directing, and producing at the Icelandic Film School. In 2011 and 2012, he served as Creative Director of the Reykjavik International Film Festival's (RIFF) Transatlantic Talent Lab, where he developed, organized, and moderated the prestigious program. The lab featured workshops and master classes led by industry professionals including Geoffrey Gilmore (Tribeca), BAFTA-winning editor Valdis Oskarsdottir, directors David Cronenberg, Béla Tarr, James Marsh, Peter Wintonik, Dario Argento, Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen, and others.
