Alice Ripley is an actor, singer, songwriter, live performer, recording artist, and mixed media artist born in California "six years before we landed on the moon, seven weeks before the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show, three weeks after John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and eleven days before Christmas," as she describes it. She is renowned for her extensive Broadway career, notably starring in the Pulitzer Prize-winning rock opera Next to Normal, which earned her the 2009 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Ripley has also appeared in television series such as #Girlboss and Outed, and in film, including Sugar!, which won her three acting awards in 2016.
Raised in various towns across Ohio and Pennsylvania, Ripley attended DePauw University, majoring in Vocal Performance, before transferring to Kent State University, where she graduated with a BFA in Musical Theatre. After college, she engaged in community theatre in San Diego and earned her Actor's Equity card at the La Jolla Playhouse through Silent Edward, a musical by Des McAnuff—then Artistic Director of the Playhouse—who later directed her Broadway debut in The Who's Tommy (original cast).
Her additional Broadway credits include original casts of American Psycho, The Rocky Horror Show, James Joyce's The Dead, Side Show (for which she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress), King David, and Sunset Boulevard, as well as a replacement role as Fantine in the original Les Misérables. She earned a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical for Next to Normal and received nominations from the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle for the same show, along with three Helen Hayes nominations for Shakespeare in Hollywood, Tell Me on a Sunday, and Company. Ripley’s stage work also includes performances in Clybourne Park, A Civil War Christmas, Wild Animals You Should Know, and The Vagina Monologues.
Her film credits include Bear With Us, Muckland, The Way I Remember It, Isn't It Delicious, Sing Along, and The Adulterer. On television, she has appeared in 30 Rock, Blue Bloods, Royal Pains, and Hee Haw.
An accomplished musician, Ripley writes and produces her own music and performs regularly. Her recordings include Daily Practice: Vol 1, Everything's Fine, Outtasite, and Ripley EP, alongside numerous Broadway cast and compilation albums. She runs a YouTube channel featuring over 300 humorous videos for a dedicated audience. Every fall, Alice returns to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to participate in the annual Next to Casi Normales concerts, sharing the stage with Jennifer Damiano, Josefina Scaglione, and Fernando Dente.
