After finishing school, he enrolled at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, completing his studies successfully. In 1924, Fritz Eckhardt secured his first engagement at the Wilhelma Theater in Stuttgart, where his father served as director. Two years later, he made his film debut in the silent movie "Rosenkavalier". He took on several roles at smaller theaters before joining "Lieber Augustin" in 1936. Alongside acting, Eckhardt began writing and directing plays.
From 1939, during World War II, Fritz Eckhardt anonymously contributed pieces to the "Wiener Werkel," Vienna's sole cabaret during the Nazi regime under Adolf Hitler. Due to his half-Jewish heritage, he was banned from working and temporarily fled to America, where he mainly wrote radio plays. After the war ended in June 1945, Eckhardt, together with Carl Merz and Kurt Nachtmann, helped reopen "Lieber Augustin." Carl Merz assumed management in the following years. Between 1946 and 1948, Fritz Eckhardt directed the Vienna "Kunsttheater."
In 1947, he participated in the "Kleine Brettl" and authored pieces for cabarets across German-speaking regions. Eckhardt became a sought-after actor and writer in post-war cinema. He gained wider recognition through his role in the series "Hello... Hotel Sacher, Portier!" Eckhardt also wrote scripts for "The Leitner Family," several "Tatort" episodes, and "Swabian Stories." One of his most successful films was the 1955 production "When the Father with the Son..." starring Heinz Rühmann.
Later, he became well-known for portraying Inspector Marek in "Tatort," a role beloved by audiences. Throughout his life, he wrote over 30 plays and more than 200 film and television scripts. In 1989, Eckhardt published his autobiography titled "I Like to Remember." This was followed by the book "An Actor Must Be Able to Do Everything" in 1992. In 1993, his wife passed away, a loss he struggled to overcome, which led to health issues requiring several surgeries.
Fritz Eckhardt passed away on December 31, 1995, in Klosterneuburg near Vienna.
