David Kohan is the Creator and Executive Producer of Will & Grace (1998), Good Morning, Miami (2002), and Executive Producer of The Stones (2004). His work on Will & Grace has earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series; a People's Choice Award for Favorite New Comedy; four Golden Globe nominations for Best Comedy Series; four GLAAD Media Awards for Outstanding TV Comedy Series; a Founders Award from Viewers for Quality Television; and the National Award for Excellence from the Human Rights Campaign.
David Kohan and Max Mutchnick began their careers as writing partners on The Dennis Miller Show (1992). Their writing credits include Hearts Afire (1992) starring John Ritter and Markie Post, Good Advice (1993) with Shelley Long, and Dream On (1990). Besides Will & Grace, they created and served as executive producers on the comedy series Boston Common (1996) and Good Morning, Miami. Currently, they are Executive Producers on the CBS comedy The Stones.
Born in New York and raised in Los Angeles, Kohan is the son of Emmy Award-winning television writer Buz Kohan, who has won 13 Emmys, and novelist Rhea Kohan. “I guess I felt a genetic imperative to write,” Kohan says. He has a twin brother, Jono, four minutes older, who works in the music industry, and a younger sister, Jenji, who is also a television writer and producer. Kohan attended Wesleyan University in Connecticut, majoring in English and philosophy. After graduating in 1986, he returned to Los Angeles and began writing for It’s Garry Shandling’s Show. Kohan remarks, “Writing television was always a way to keep me off the mean streets of Beverly Hills where I might have fallen in with the wrong crowd of wealthy professionals.”
In 1991, Kohan partnered with Mutchnick, and after securing an agent, they have been writing together ever since. “I love sitcom writing,” Kohan says. “To me, it’s the most satisfying venue for a writer. You write a script, and then two and a half weeks later, you see the fruits of your labor.” Kohan lives in Los Angeles with his 8-year-old daughter, Olivia. When not working, he enjoys reading about his favorite topic: 15th-century midwifery.
