Lopez is a multifaceted filmmaker—showrunner, producer, director, cinematographer, and lighting designer. His work is distinguished by striking visuals, lighting, and composition.
He directed the Emmy-nominated History Channel mini-series, The World Wars. As director of photography for The Men Who Built America, another eight-hour History Channel mini-series, he received a Primetime Emmy nomination.
His recent projects include Washington for History, which launched as one of the most successful cable TV debuts in years; American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story for Amazon; Season 1 of Roman Empire for Netflix; Jonestown: Terror in the Jungle for AMC/Sundance; Jerusalem for CNN; The Icons That Built America for History; and Liberty or Death: Boston Tea Party for Fox Networks.
Spike Lee executive produced his most recent feature film as director of photography, The Girl is in Trouble, starring Wilmer Valderrama. For his cinematography on I Sell the Dead, featuring Ron Perlman and Dominic Monaghan, López won the Kodak Vision Award for Best Cinematographer at the Slamdance Film Festival. Variety magazine praised his work as "expert."
He has shot concerts for Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Mariah Carey, Harry Connick Jr., Florence and the Machine, and the Jonas Brothers. His corporate and commercial clients include Pfizer, Pepsi, Taco Bell, Reese’s, Christian Dior, Paul Mitchell, Sears, Bank of America, Philips Norelco, Sony, Kimberly-Clark, Nestle, Mastercard, and Hershey’s.
Before entering the television industry, López spent seven years in Washington, DC’s policy arena. He served as a congressional aide to Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Executive Director of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and held a political appointment in the Clinton Administration. He earned degrees from Columbia University, Stanford University, and the University of Michigan. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of directing and producing at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema at Brooklyn College.
