John earned his B.A. in Theater & American Studies from Yale University before enrolling in New York University's Graduate Film Program. His first short film, "Shame No More," was showcased at over 70 film festivals. His second short, "Slo-Mo," debuted at Telluride and Sundance and was later broadcast on HBO, PBS, and the Sundance Channel.
He co-wrote and directed his feature debut, "Kill Your Darlings," featuring Daniel Radcliffe, Ben Foster, Elizabeth Olsen, Dane Dehaan, Jack Huston, Michael C. Hall, David Cross, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The film premiered at Sundance, competed at Toronto and Venice, and was released theatrically by Sony Pictures Classics.
John has directed television projects for ABC, CBS, and FOX and written screenplays for Universal, Fox 2000, Lionsgate, and Miramax. He is currently preparing to direct his second feature, "Tunnels," starring Susan Sarandon, Anna Faris, Patrick Wilson, Alicia Silverstone, and Jaeden Martell.
Recognized by Variety as one of their "Top Ten Directors To Watch," by The Advocate as one of their "Top 40 Under 40," and included in Out Magazine's Out 100, John also serves as Co-Chair of the DGA's LGBTQ+ Committee, which he helped establish.
He has acted as a judge and mentor for the Hamptons International Film Festival, Nantucket Film Festival's Screenwriter's Colony, and Outfest's Screenwriters Lab. Additionally, he has taught filmmaking at the University of Southern California, New York University, the New School, and Yale University.
