Born and raised in Rome, Roberto Campanella trained at the Scuola Italiana di Danza Contemporanea. In 1985, he joined the Compagnia Italiana di Danza Contemporanea and later became a member of the renowned Aterballetto. In 1993, he joined The National Ballet of Canada, where he quickly advanced to Soloist and performed numerous classical and contemporary roles.
Roberto made his choreographic debut at The National Ballet of Canada's 1995 Choreographic Workshop. After retiring from the company in 1996, he completed the National Ballet School's Teacher Training Program with distinction. He is now a highly sought-after guest teacher, working with companies such as The National Ballet of Canada, Stuttgart Ballet, and others in Italy, Korea, and Japan.
While Roberto primarily choreographs for ProArteDanza, he also creates a diverse range of commissioned works for companies both domestically and internationally. In 2001, he was nominated for the Bonnie Bird Choreography Award in London. He received the Fellowship Initiative Award from the New York Choreographic Institute, affiliated with the New York City Ballet, in 2007, and was granted a Chalmers Professional Development Award in 2008.
Campanella’s first full-length production, Alice in Wonderland, premiered at Ballet Augsburg in Germany in October 2008.
He won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Choreography alongside co-choreographer Robert Glumbek for ... in between..., which debuted during ProArteDanza's 2010 season.
Currently, Roberto is a highly sought-after choreographer and director for film and television, creating movement and dance choreography for productions including The Strain, Pompeii, Mortal Instruments, Nikita, Silent Hill, and the four-time Academy Award-winning The Shape of Water, among others.
