Larry Rhine was a prolific comedy writer who worked throughout the golden age of radio, television, and film. Over a fifty-year career, he served as a television staff writer for top-rated comedy shows such as All In The Family, Red Skelton, Bob Hope, Mr. Ed, Here's Lucy, Oh Susanna, and Private Secretary. His freelance work included credits on The Odd Couple, The Brady Bunch, Sanford and Sons, Tugboat Annie, Gimme a Break, Different Strokes, Bachelor Father, and animated series like Pebbles and Bam Bam and The Barkleys, among many others.
Born in San Francisco on May 26, 1910, a third-generation San Franciscan, Rhine earned his BA from the University of California, Berkeley in 1931. While there, he captained a renowned debating team that traveled globally, defeating teams as far as China. After college, in 1934, he began his radio career at KGB in San Diego with Art Linkletter, working as a writer, announcer, and director. He advanced in radio, penning scripts for popular programs including Ben Bernie's The 'Ol Maestro, Life Of Riley, G.E. Theater, Colgate Comedy Hour, and Duffy's Tavern, where he met his wife, actress Hazel Shermet, who portrayed Miss Duffy.
In 1936, Rhine transitioned to screenwriting for Universal Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox. His credits include Chip of the Flying U (1940), The Devil's Pipeline (1940), The Leather Pushers (1940), A Dangerous Game (1941), and Six Lessons from Madame La Zonga (1941). At Universal, he was tasked with creating numerous musical shorts using leftover sets from feature films.
During World War II, Rhine served as Chief of the Philippine Division, Office of War Information, overseeing all shortwave broadcasts. He played a key role in arranging General MacArthur’s iconic "I Shall Return" speech, advising MacArthur to say "We Shall Return." This counsel led to Rhine being removed from a shore boat that was later fire-bombed on that historic day. He earned numerous citations, including honors from Philippine President Manuel Quezon and Foreign Minister Carlos Romulo, along with many letters of gratitude from the Filipino people.
As a television writer for All in the Family in 1971, Rhine received two Emmy Award nominations, a Writers Guild Award, a Humanitas Award, a Golden Globe, and a Heartfund Award. He served as Trustee of the Producer-Writer's Pension Plan in Los Angeles from 1960 to 1970, acting as Chairman in 1968. In 1974, he was honored with the Founders Award, recognizing his "diligence and wisdom" during critical years. He received the Producer-Writer Pension Plan Founders Plaque in 1980 and was a member of both the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and Pioneer Broadcasters, earning the Pioneer Broadcasters Diamond Circle Plaque. In 1999, Rhine was filmed for the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences Archive of American Television.
During periods of hiatus and semi-retirement, Larry and his wife Hazel worked as travel journalists—Larry as the writer and Hazel as the photographer. Their international travel stories appeared on the front pages of travel sections in major national newspapers across the United States and Canada for over nine years.
