Nuno Gil is a Portuguese actor, performer, and theatre director based in Lisbon, Portugal. He has studied performing arts and dance across Europe, the USA, and Japan, dedicating ten years to theatre and film research in major cities such as Madrid, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, New York, and Rio de Janeiro. His film debut came in 2014 with the role of Rui in "Two Drifters," directed by the acclaimed and award-winning João Pedro Rodrigues, whose film won the "Special Mention Cinema de Recherche" at the 2005 International Cannes Film Festival. Nuno is fluent in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French.
He began his training in 1999 at the Lisbon National Theatre Conservatoire, where he completed his degree. He also studied at the School of Music and Performing Arts of Oporto (Esmae, 2001), Estudis de Teatre in Barcelona, and the Royal School of Dramatic Art in Madrid (Resad), where he earned a degree in Physical Theatre in 2003. In 2002, he received a fellowship from the Orient Foundation and Kyoto Arts Centre (KAC) to study Butoh Dance and Noh Theatre in Kyoto, Japan. That same year, he joined the Shizuku Butoh Dance Company in Tokyo, led by Japanese dancer and choreographer Dakei. Additionally, he trained in Butoh dance under Kazuo Ohno and Akiko Fujimoto.
In 2004, Nuno won the Young Artists Award in Theatre, sponsored by Portugal’s National Culture Centre (CNC), to research the Suzuki method of acting at SCOT (Suzuki Company of Toga), guided by its creator and artistic director Tadashi Suzuki. In 2008, he was awarded a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to study and observe Anne Bogart’s SITI Company, focusing on the development of Viewpoints and Suzuki Method techniques. That same year, he also received a scholarship from the Portuguese Actor's Guild (GDA) to study with Susan Batson at her Black Nexxus Studio in New York City.
As a theatre director, Nuno’s notable works include "Parece una Tonteria" at Teatro Valle Inclán, Madrid (2003); "After the Rehearsal" at The Tank, New York (2009); "Tragédia Brasileira" (Brazilian Tragedy) at Teatro Nelson Rodrigues, Rio de Janeiro (2010); and "Matei Por Amor" (I Have Killed for Love) at Teatro Municipal São Luís, Lisbon (2016).
In Portugal, Nuno has collaborated with numerous theatre companies, including Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II, Teatro da Cornucópia, Teatro Aberto, Teatro Municipal São Luiz, Teatro Maria Matos, Teatro Praga, Teatro Taborda, Teatro Nacional São João, and Seiva Trupe Teatro.
In film, Nuno has worked in Portugal and Brazil with directors such as João Pedro Rodrigues in "Odete" (2004); Paulo Rebelo in "Efeitos Secundários" (2006); Joaquim Leitão in "20,13" (2007); Caetano Gotardo in "Desassossego" (2009); Aline Portugal in "Frineia" (2012); Antonio da Silva in "Dancers" (2014); Ernesto Solis in "Longe Demais Não É Suficiente" (2015); Patrícia Sequeira in "Porta ao Lado" (2021); and Cristèle Alves Meira in "Alma Viva" (2021).
