Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine will soon star alongside Anne Hathaway and Adam Driver in Ron Howard's forthcoming Amazon MGM Studios film Alone at Dawn. He is currently filming Season 2 of the Paramount+/Showtime series Dexter: Resurrection, reprising his breakout role as Blessing Kamara. Both projects are slated for release in 2026.
Mwine recently received widespread critical acclaim for his transformative role as Freddy Fasano in Dennis Lehane's Apple TV+ crime drama Smoke, starring opposite Taron Egerton. Critics highlighted Mwine as one of the series' standout performers, reinforcing his reputation for delivering profound depth and complexity in psychologically challenging roles.
He previously starred opposite Rachel Weisz in Dead Ringers, Alice Birch's Peabody Award-winning adaptation of David Cronenberg's 1988 thriller for Amazon. He also played Detective Raymond Griggs in Netflix's popular legal drama The Lincoln Lawyer, developed by David E. Kelley and Ted Humphrey, based on Michael Connelly's bestselling novels.
Mwine's extensive television work includes his acclaimed portrayal of Ronnie in Lena Waithe's The Chi. Critics from Variety, The Boston Globe, RogerEbert.com, and The New York Times praised his performance, with The New York Times describing Mwine as "especially remarkable as the precariously balanced Ronnie." In 2020, the Los Angeles Times named Mwine one of Sundance's breakout stars. That year, he won the Best Actor Award at the Durban International Film Festival for his leading role in Ekwa Msangi's acclaimed feature Farewell Amor. His performance received praise from Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, which noted that "Mwine stuns with his elegant pauses and piercing stares that seem to jump through the screen." The film was later recognized as one of the National Board of Review's Top Ten Independent Films of the Year.
Mwine's film credits also include Mira Nair's Queen of Katwe, opposite Lupita Nyong'o and David Oyelowo, and Edward Zwick's Blood Diamond, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Connelly.
As a filmmaker, Mwine has gained international acclaim for both narrative and documentary projects. His award-winning short film Kuhani earned the Best Achievement in Directing prize at the Oscar-qualifying International Kurzfilmtage Winterthur in Switzerland and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize for Best Short Film at Slamdance.
His documentary feature Memories of Love Returned, executive produced by Steven Soderbergh, was named one of OkayAfrica's "Ten Best African Documentaries of 2024." The film explores the life and work of renowned Ugandan photographer Kibaate Aloysius Ssalongo, has screened on five continents, and won multiple Best Documentary awards at festivals worldwide.
