Paul Grabowsky is a pianist, composer, arranger, and conductor, recognized as one of Australia's most esteemed artists.
Born in Papua New Guinea in 1958, Paul grew up in Melbourne and attended Wesley College. He started classical piano lessons at age five, studying under Mack Jost from 1965 to 1978. Around 1976, he began informal jazz studies and devoted himself fully to improvised music from 1978. Throughout the 1970s, he became a prominent figure in Melbourne’s music scene, participating in various jazz, theatre, and cabaret projects. From 1980 to 1985, he lived in Munich, Germany, where he was active in the local and European jazz circuits, performing and recording with artists such as Johnny Griffin, Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Benny Bailey, Guenther Klatt, and Marty Cook. He returned to Australia in 1986.
In 1983, he established the Paul Grabowsky Trio, which has won four ARIA awards and stands as one of Australia’s longest-running and most influential jazz groups. He has also earned two Helpmann awards, multiple Bell awards, and a Deadly award. In 2000, he was named Sydney Myer Performing Artist of the Year, and in 2007, he received the Melbourne Prize for Music.
As a performer, he gained recognition through his work with the 'Wizards of Oz,' a group he co-led with saxophonist Dale Barlow from 1987 to 1989, as well as with Vince Jones, serving as his musical director in 1988 and 1989. Between 1990 and 1992, he led the 'Groovematics,' the band featured on the nightly national television program 'Tonight Live'.
He regularly performs and records with vocalists Shelley Scown, Robyn Archer, Katie Noonan, and Megan Washington. Paul is also the founder and Artistic Director of the Australian Art Orchestra, which tours both nationally and internationally. Recent AAO projects have focused on collaborations with traditional and contemporary Indigenous performers. Among his numerous recordings are two CDs from the Hush series, for which he serves as Artistic Director; these albums are designed to aid the healing environment of Melbourne's Children's Hospital.
Paul is esteemed as one of Australia’s leading screen composers, collaborating with directors such as Gillian Armstrong on The Last Days of Chez Nous; Paul Cox on Innocence and Human Touch; John Irvin on Shiner and The Fine Art of Love: Mine Ha Ha; and Fred Schepisi on Last Orders and It Runs in the Family. His extensive television work includes the ABC series Phoenix and Janus. He achieved notable success with Jungle Book 2, co-writing songs with lyricist Lorraine Feather.
More recently, Paul worked with director Beth MaLure on the feature film Daisy Winters. Prior to this, he scored David Parker’s feature film The Menkoff Method. He also composed the score for Fred Schepisi’s Words and Pictures, starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche, which features an end-title song with lyrics by the film’s writer Gerry DiPego. Paul collaborated again with Schepisi on The Eye of the Storm, which includes performances by renowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis. He also worked with Marsalis on his latest international album Tales of Time and Space, recorded in New York to critical acclaim.
His theatrical compositions include the operas The Mercenary (1997–1999) and Love in the Age of Therapy, which premiered in October 2002 at the Sydney Opera House, followed by sold-out performances in January 2003 at the Sydney Arts Festival. His music for the shadow play The Theft of Sita (1999–2000) earned him a Helpmann award.
In 1996, Paul produced and presented the television series Access All Areas and served as Commissioning Editor for ABC Television Arts and Entertainment from 1996 to 1998. In 2005, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Queensland Music Festival 2007. The Adelaide Festival of Arts named him Artistic Director for the 2010 and 2012 Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts. In June 2012, he became a Vice-Chancellor's Professorial Fellow in the School of Music, and in July 2012, he was appointed Executive Director of Performing Arts at the Academy of Performing Arts, Monash University.
