Composer, pianist, arranger, and producer Mu Carvalho is the founder and member of A Cor do Som. His compositional skills are evident in hits like "Sapato Velho" (co-written with Paulinho Tapajós), "Terra do Nunca," "Chocolate Com Pimenta" (with Aldir Blanc), "Semente do Amor," and "Swingue Menina" (with Moraes Moreira). He also composed music for the soundtracks of films such as A Dama do Lotação, Os Sete Gatinhos, Navalha na Carne (all directed by Neville de Almeida), and O Noviço Rebelde, Xuxa e os Duendes 2, and Xuxa Popstar (all directed by Tizuka Yamazaki). His debut solo album was the 1985 LP Meu Continente Encontrado, featuring special contributions from Luis Eça, Egberto Gismonti, Ze Luiz, and produced by Egberto Gismonti.
As a sideman in live performances and recordings, Mu has collaborated with artists including Chico Buarque, Jorge Ben Jor, MPB-4, Alceu Valença, Moraes Moreira, Fernanda Abreu, Legião Urbana, Luiz Caldas, Paulinho Moska, Gabriel O Pensador, and Marina Lima. In his role as a producer, Mu earned a 15-diamond CD for the Biblia Sagrada collection, which sold over 15 million copies.
Mu began his artistic career at age 16 with the group Semente. In 1974, he joined Jorge Ben's Banda do Zé Pretinho. The following year, the group that became known as A Cor do Som (consisting of Mu, his brother Dadi, Gustavo, and Armandinho) served as Moraes Moreira's backing band and recorded his first album. In 1976, Mu co-wrote "Sapato Velho" with Claudio Nucci and Paulinho Tapajós; the song became a hit and was re-recorded multiple times, establishing Mu Carvalho as a notable composer. His composition "Espírito Infantil" earned fifth place at the first National Choro Festival organized by TV Bandeirantes.
In 1978, Mu accompanied Gilberto Gil at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland and on his tours through France, Argentina, and Brazil. In 1990, he toured Brazil with Legião Urbana and contributed to their live album Música Para Acampamento. Mu also produced the album Erasmo Carlos Convida 2, released in May 2007, featuring special guests such as Djavan, Marisa Monte, Chico Buarque, Skank, Los Hermanos, Kid Abelha, Zeca Pagodinho, Lulu Santos, Adriana Calcanhotto, Simone, Os Cariocas, and Milton Nascimento.
Since 1994, Mu has worked with Globo TV Network, composing music for popular soap operas and miniseries. From the 1990s onward, he has focused primarily on studio work while continuing to perform on numerous international tours.
