Spencer Gillis is a writer/director, camera operator, and member of the Society of Camera Operators.
He made his directorial debut with the 2013 short film GUN, which premiered in competition at the Sundance Film Festival. GUN was showcased at over fifteen festivals worldwide, winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Atlanta Film Festival as well as Best Actor and Best Narrative at Hollyshorts Film Festival. The film is available on iTunes and distributed by SHORTS INTERNATIONAL, LTD. His most recent short film, SWEEP (2015), premiered at the Aspen Shortsfest and screened at twelve festivals, earning the Audience Choice Award for Best Short at FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival.
As a co-founder of 2.35, Spencer has produced award-winning narrative and documentary shorts and directed projects for VICE Media. He has also presented his work and lectured at film programs in institutions such as Cornell, Denison, and Florida Atlantic University. In 2014, he served as a short film juror for the Milwaukee Film Festival.
Spencer's professional experience includes work as a camera assistant on over twenty feature films, including SHAME, BLUE VALENTINE, ARBITRAGE, and OUR IDIOT BROTHER, as well as in documentary, episodic television, commercials, and online content. He attributes his directing style and philosophy to years of on-set observation, particularly through collaborations with directors Derek Cianfrance and Steve McQueen.
In 2012, Spencer transitioned into camera operating, demonstrating versatility across various shooting styles. His credits include reality TV shows for DISCOVERY, TLC, and NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC; webisodes for 30 ROCK; and scripted productions such as ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, CHICAGO PD, and EMPIRE.
A native of Kansas, Gillis studied at the University of Iowa, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Cinema and a Master of Arts in Film Studies.
