Meyer Shwarzstein has sought innovative ways to use new technology to reach wider audiences and tell stories differently. In the 1970s, he left engineering school to run a rock'n roll magazine, entered the film industry by selling video cassettes to record stores, and in 1980, joined MGM to license films to pay and cable TV. In 1983, Atlantic Releasing (known for Valley Girl, Teen Wolf) brought him on board, and he has remained an independent filmmaker since. In 1990, at Image Organization, he secured the first basic cable premiere deal for a theatrical film. By 1995, he founded Brainstorm Media, a U.S. distributor and producer. Brainstorm was an early adopter of digital distribution, which helped the company grow into a full-service theatrical distributor. Since 1993, Shwarzstein has been involved in development and production, contributing to the development, production, and financing of numerous films and TV shows.
In 2023, after his daughter took charge of Brainstorm Media's distribution arm, he established Another Brainy Idea to develop, produce, and finance uplifting projects. This company focuses on adaptations of well-known books, true stories, and other intellectual properties. Shwarzstein has been an advocate for the independent film industry in Washington, D.C., and is a member of both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Outside of family time, he pursues various interests including game design, composing, publishing, and serving on nonprofit boards.
