Geronimo Mercado, a multidisciplinary artist from Puerto Rico, draws on his Latino heritage to explore various art forms, with a strong focus on music. As a composer, he incorporates diverse influences and collaborates with underrepresented storytellers, including minority and female directors. His notable film work includes "12 Hours," which won at the Tribeca Film Festival; "Miente," Puerto Rico's official Oscar submission; and "200 Letters," featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda and recognized at the Platino Awards. Mercado has composed scores for over 30 films in both Spanish and English markets, including Hollywood productions such as "Ana" starring Andy Garcia, "Speed Kills" starring John Travolta, and "Driven" starring Jason Sudeikis, which participated in the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. His original soundtracks are released through Polifacetic Music/Universal Music.
A Berklee College of Music graduate with dual majors in Film Scoring and Music Business, Mercado also holds an MFA in Sound Arts from Columbia University. He is an alumnus of LAFCI and a Cannes Marché du Film Spot The Composer Fellow. Throughout his artistic development, he has studied with esteemed mentors such as Miya Masaoka (Sound Arts), John Kessler (Sculpture), Liz Philips (Interactive Art), Miller Puckette (Max MSP/PD), as well as Angel Velez, Bill Ross, and Conrad Pope (Conducting and Orchestration).
In the electronic music scene, Mercado champions the experimental instrument "Reactable Live," performing under the alias "Rec Deselby," with notable appearances at events like Electric Daisy Carnival. He continually experiments with sound and visual arts across various formats, from sound sculptures to interactive installations designed to inspire unity and self-awareness amid social challenges. His significant exhibitions include the AICA Award-winning "Poetic Science" and installations like "Victrolian Man," "K@lostrum," and "Memorial to a Sound Ghost" (dedicated to Pauline Oliveros). His work has been exhibited worldwide, including galleries in San Juan, New York, Cuba, China, and Japan.
Mercado splits his time between Puerto Rico, New York, and Los Angeles, honing his artistic practice and developing his distinct voice. He is also commissioned to premiere an opera titled "The Teflon King" in 2026, marking the next phase in his artistic evolution.
