Daniel James Gosling is an English actor and writer.
Born in England, he studied at Bretton Hall College.
He debuted on the London stage as Lucius in a fringe production of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus at The Courtyard Theatre in King's Cross. After this, he founded his own theatre company, producing and starring in plays at The Union Theatre, The Southwark Playhouse, and The Cochrane Theatre in London, as well as performing on tour across the UK.
He spent two years touring the UK and Europe performing Shakespeare outdoors before making his West End debut in 2004.
Gosling's West End debut saw him take over the lead role of Christian in Festen at the Lyric Theatre. Directed by Rufus Norris, the production earned five Olivier Award nominations in 2005. It also won the Evening Standard and Critics Circle Best Director Awards, the Evening Standard Best Designer award, and the Whatsonstage Theatregoer's Choice Award for Best New Play.
After Festen, Gosling appeared in Phaedra's Love, Sarah Kane's modern adaptation of Seneca's Phaedra. Produced by the Young Vic, this marked the first professional staging of the play since its 1996 premiere at London's Gate Theatre, directed by Kane herself.
He has performed at venues including The Barbican, Bristol Old Vic, The Arts, Tristan Bates Theatre, The New End Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre, Theatre 503, The Pleasance in London, and at the Edinburgh Festival.
In 2010, Gosling acted with the National Theatre in Thea Sharrock's acclaimed revival of Terence Rattigan's After the Dance. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, the production received six Olivier Award nominations in 2011, winning four, including Best Revival.
In 2013, he portrayed Sir Peter Teazle in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's The School for Scandal, directed by Jessica Swale, as part of The Park Theatre's inaugural season in London.
On screen, his notable film credits include Ridley Scott's All the Money in the World; Abner Pastoll's Homicide: Division B, which was a finalist in Jason Reitman's Project Direct! film competition; and Harold's Going Stiff, Keith Wright's innovative zombie film that won the Narrative Feature Award at the 2011 Austin Film Festival. In 2019, he reunited with Abner Pastoll on A Good Woman is Hard to Find, written by Oscar-nominated Ronan Blaney, about a widowed young mother seeking justice for her husband's murder, starring Sarah Bolger. He is also set to appear in Philipa Lowthorpe's Misbehaviour, depicting women disrupting the 1970 Miss World contest in London, starring Keira Knightley.
Gosling made his television debut as the young Isaac Newton in the BBC Mini-Series Light Fantastic. He has since appeared in the British daytime soap Doctors; the BBC TV movie adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's The Lady Vanishes; and the BBC America series The Musketeers. He played David Walker in Series 2 of the BAFTA-winning ITV drama Unforgotten and portrayed Hugo in Sam Yates' Agatha and the Curse of Ishtar. In 2020, he appeared alongside Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies in Season 4 of The Crown.
As a writer, Gosling is one half of the writing duo Rusty Goose, developing television and radio comedy with fellow actor Russell Bentley. He also has several feature films in development.
Gosling lives with director Jennie Paddon. They have a son and a daughter.
