Alexander Balanescu, a Romanian-born violinist and composer of international acclaim, made his debut at the age of nine. He completed his studies at the Juilliard School in New York, studying under Dolly Korizer and Dorothy Delay. From 1983 to 1987, he was a member of the Arditti Quartet, specializing in contemporary classical music. In 1987, he founded the Balanescu Quartet, aiming to create new music that was more accessible and communicative. Renowned as an interdisciplinary artist, Balanescu is a composer, improviser, and performer. He has collaborated with artists across diverse genres, including John Lurie, Gavin Bryars, Michael Nyman, Jack DeJohnette, John Surman, Andy Sheppard, and Carla Bley. His work has also extended into pop music, supporting the Pet Shop Boys and recording with David Byrne, Kraftwerk, the Yellow Magic Orchestra, and the German band To Rococo Rot on their latest album. Seeking to reconnect with his Eastern European heritage, he has recently worked with the Hungarian group Musikas and singer Marta Sebestyen. Drawing inspiration from folk traditions, Balanescu produced the album Luminitza and developed pieces based on folk songs performed by the celebrated Romanian singer Maria Tanase. More recently, he toured England with Philip Glass and Foday Musa Suso, creating a unique performance style with Suso that incorporates improvisation and song.
