Academy Award-winning JOEL HARLOW is recognized as one of the most innovative makeup and special effects artists and designers in American cinema. He is among the rare artists who seamlessly bridge the gap between makeup effects design and on-set makeup application. Reviving the traditional studio model of an "in-house" makeup and prosthetics department, Harlow and his team have adeptly managed last-minute requests and modifications across numerous major productions.
In 1986, Harlow left his hometown of Grand Forks, ND, for the fast-paced environment of New York City. Attending the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan allowed him to develop his skills, initially as an animation major. However, his true passion lay in makeup and prosthetics, leading him to work on a variety of low-budget genre films where he crafted characters on limited budgets. Whether as an animator or makeup artist, his primary focus was always character creation.
Los Angeles was the natural next step for a makeup effects artist in the late '80s and early '90s, and Harlow soon relocated there. After a decade working with various makeup effects studios in the San Fernando Valley, he joined the union. This membership enabled him not only to design and build makeup but also to apply it on set, allowing him to fully realize a character from concept to completion—a specialty he mastered.
Eager to apply his skills on set, Harlow steadily contributed to high-profile films such as "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," "A.I. Artificial Intelligence," "Planet of the Apes," "Constantine," and "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," developing lasting collaborations with Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. He served as the key makeup artist, makeup effects supervisor, and prosthetic makeup designer on "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," both directed by Verbinski. Well-versed in the "Pirates" aesthetic, he was makeup designer and department head on "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," directed by Rob Marshall. Harlow also led the makeup department for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" (2017) during additional photography, marking his involvement across all five films in the franchise.
In 2009, Harlow transitioned from the gritty world of Captain Jack Sparrow to the sleek, futuristic realm of Captain Kirk, tasked with designing the looks for Romulans and reintroducing Vulcans in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek," a project that earned him an Academy Award in 2010. Prior to this, he had received a Critics' Choice Award for "Alice in Wonderland," as well as Primetime Emmy Awards for the television miniseries adaptations of Stephen King's "The Stand" and "The Shining," alongside nominations for "Mad Men," "Carnivàle," and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
Over the past eight years, Harlow has worked as Johnny Depp's makeup artist on films including "Alice in Wonderland," "Alice Through the Looking Glass," "The Tourist," "Transcendence," "Mortdecai," "Tusk," and "Into the Woods." He also served as makeup designer on "The Rum Diary," "Dark Shadows," "Black Mass," and "The Lone Ranger," the latter earning him a second Academy Award nomination. Additionally, Harlow was key makeup artist on Ron Howard's "Angels & Demons," key prosthetic makeup artist for Christopher Nolan's "Inception," key prosthetic makeup artist on "Green Lantern," and makeup department head on "Battle: Los Angeles."
Embracing the creative opportunities presented by Justin Lin's "Star Trek Beyond," Harlow assembled some of the industry's top artists to bring an impressive 56 distinct alien species to life. This film showcased an unprecedented number of elaborate practical makeup designs, a point of great pride for Harlow and his team.
Currently, Harlow's company, Morphology FX Inc., continues to produce a wide array of cutting-edge makeup, special effects makeup, and prosthetics. The team's artistic passion remains focused on guiding characters from the lab through to the set.
