Krzysztof Penderecki was a Polish composer and conductor whose music frequently featured in films, though he rarely created original film scores. Notable movies featuring his compositions include "The Exorcist" (1973), "The Shining" (1980), "Wild at Heart" (1990), "Fearless" (1993), "Inland Empire" (2006), "Children of Men" (2006), and "Shutter Island" (2010).
Born in the town of Dębica in the historic region of Lesser Poland, Penderecki was the son of lawyer Tadeusz Penderecki and his wife Zofia. Tadeusz was an amateur violinist and pianist. Penderecki's grandfather, Robert Berger, was a bank director and painter. Robert's father, Johann Berger, a German Protestant from Breslau (now Wrocław), converted to Catholicism to marry a Catholic woman. Penderecki's grandmother, Stefania, was Armenian from Stanisławów in Austria-Hungary (now Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine).
Penderecki was six when World War II began. His family was forced to vacate their apartment, which was seized by the Ministry of Food. The war disrupted his education; he began grammar school in 1946 at age 13 and graduated in 1951.
During his school years, Penderecki began violin lessons with military bandmaster Stanisław Darlak, who also conducted a local orchestra in Dębica. In 1951, he enrolled at Jagiellonian University in Kraków to continue music studies. He trained as a violinist under Stanisław Tawroszewicz and studied music theory with Franciszek Skolyszewski.
In 1954, Penderecki entered the Academy of Music in Kraków, shifting focus from violin to composition. His first composition teacher was Artur Malawski, known for choral and orchestral works, who passed away in 1957 before Penderecki finished his studies. Subsequently, he was mentored by Stanisław Wiechowicz (1893–1963), who often drew inspiration from Polish folk music.
Penderecki graduated from the Academy in 1958 and immediately accepted a teaching position there. He began publishing original works influenced by Pierre Boulez, Igor Stravinsky, and Anton Webern. His compositions "Strophen," "Psalms of David," and "Emanations" premiered in 1959 and received critical acclaim.
His first internationally recognized piece was "Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima" (1960), written for 52 string instruments. Another significant work was the provocative "Fluorescences" (1962), composed for the Donaueschingen Festival in Germany. He experimented with unconventional percussion instruments for classical music, including a Mexican güiro, typewriters, and gongs.
Throughout the 1960s, Penderecki remained part of the avant-garde movement. By the early 1970s, he began incorporating post-Romantic influences, creating more traditional compositions. He became one of Poland's leading composers, receiving the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 1964 and the Commander's Cross in 1974.
In the mid-1970s, Penderecki joined the Yale School of Music as a professor. His music grew more melodic; for example, his "Symphony No. 2, Christmas" (1980) featured straightforward harmonies and melodies, frequently quoting the Christmas carol "Silent Night" (1818) by Franz Xaver Gruber. He explained his departure from avant-garde music by viewing novelty as "more destructive than constructive."
In 1980, the Polish trade union Solidarity commissioned him to compose music honoring those killed in anti-government riots at the Gdańsk shipyards. Penderecki initially created "Lacrimosa" for this purpose, which he expanded into the renowned "Polish Requiem," revising it multiple times between 1980 and 2005.
By the 2000s, Penderecki had garnered numerous international awards and widespread acclaim. He embarked on several unfinished projects due partly to declining health, including an opera adaptation of Jean Racine's 1677 tragedy "Phèdre" and a composition commemorating the centennial of the Armenian Genocide.
Krzysztof Penderecki passed away in March 2020 at his home in Kraków, Poland, after a prolonged illness. He was 86 years old, and many of his compositions remain celebrated examples of 20th-century film music.
