Ryan Michael Douglas Spong was born on March 18, 1992, in Trowbridge, Wiltshire. His mother, Sharon, worked as a receptionist, and his father, Michael, was a plasterer. He has a younger brother named Ben. His middle names, Michael and Douglas, are purely coincidental and not linked to the actor Michael Douglas. The name 'Michael' comes from his father and grandfather, while 'Douglas' honors his other grandfather, who passed away twelve years before Ryan was born.
As a child, Ryan was passionate about films, often rewatching The Lion King, The Mask, and, surprisingly, after much insistence, Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.
His first acting role was in primary school, where he played a dragon. Practicing his roar at home often led to his parents asking him to be quiet, unaware he was rehearsing for a role. During secondary school, Ryan focused more on sports, captaining both the football and cricket teams, only participating in the school play during his final year.
At 16, Ryan started studying Performing Arts at Wiltshire College, Trowbridge, but left at 18, just three months shy of completing his second year, to pursue acting full-time. After working on several feature and short films, he moved to London in 2012 on the day of the Olympic opening ceremony. Soon after, he landed his first TV commercial for the UK Home Office and MTV, participating in an abuse awareness campaign aimed at preventing abuse in teenage relationships. He subsequently appeared in campaigns for brands such as Proximus, Snickers, Popchips, and Tog 24.
To support himself between acting roles, Ryan occasionally took various jobs abroad to fuel his sense of adventure and embrace new experiences. One such role had him in Finland for five weeks as an activity guide, chauffeuring elves and families to different spots, building fires in the snow, and leading snowmobile trips through forests. Another job took him to Fontaine-Le-Port, a small village in north-central France, where he worked for six weeks on the horse team.
