Nicolai (Nico) hails from a family of actors; his mother is Melitta Tegeler, and his grandfather was actor Ludwig Kerscher. At 15, he joined an off-theatre group. His first TV role was a lead in an episode of ARD's Dr. Sommerfeld - Neues vom Bülowbogen (1997). After spending time in New York, he completed his acting training at Berlin's Fritz Kirchhoff School from 2000 to 2003, graduating with stage maturity. Since then, Nicolai has appeared in numerous television, film, and stage productions, becoming a recognized figure in German theatre and screen.
In 2009, he co-founded the film production company Colafilm with Alexander Kiersch.
Together, Nicolai and Alexander produced the feature film When Edith's Bells Toll (2016), a humorous, trashy Christmas comedy. Distributed by Edition Salzgeber, the film was screened nationally and internationally at various film festivals and is available on Amazon Prime. Nicolai co-directed this feature.
In 2019/2020, Nicolai independently directed the feature film Zu den Sternen (2020) in collaboration with Cellophane Films and iLikeStories. The film was showcased at numerous national and international film festivals, earning multiple awards. It is his second feature film and his first solo directorial project. The film was released in select cinemas across Germany and Austria in autumn 2021, and the public broadcaster MDR acquired the license rights for three years.
Since 2015, he has voiced the character Hutchinson Hatch in the radio play series Professor van Dusen, based on Michael Koser’s work, succeeding Klaus Herm.
Since 2019, Tegeler has hosted the talk show "Tegeler meets..." on Hauptstadt TV, where he introduces viewers to various personalities and their favorite city spots.
