Gary Marlowe is a filmmaker who creates music.
An award-winning composer, producer, pianist, singer, guitarist, and drummer, Marlowe began playing piano at age four, became a synthesizer prodigy in his early teens, and emerged as one of Berlin’s leading musicians, opening for acts such as Iggy Pop and The Ramones with his band.
Marlowe achieved No. 1 hit songwriter and producer status for several top artists, earning Platinum and Gold Records, and collaborated across genres from electronica to speed metal.
Praised as "a legend" by newspapers in his early twenties, Marlowe evolved into a true multi-instrumentalist, developing a unique, eclectic compositional style influenced by his Ethnomusicology studies and broad interest in diverse musical cultures and unconventional sounds.
After scoring several projects and receiving a nomination for the German Film Award, he chose to pursue his passion for filmmaking.
Relocating to Italy, Marlowe studied Film Composition under Oscar winners Luis Bacalov ("The Postman") and Nicola Piovani ("Life is Beautiful"), winning the Emma Contestabile Award during his final year at the Accademia Chigiana, an institution also attended by Claudio Abbado and Daniel Barenboim. Since then, film scoring has been central to his career, earning him multiple awards and festival honors.
Today, Gary Marlowe is recognized for his minimalist fusion of acoustic instruments, ambient electronic soundscapes, and elegantly restrained orchestral elements. The World Soundtrack Academy selected him to perform one of his compositions with The Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, alongside renowned composers such as Angelo Badalamenti, Mychael Danna, James Newton Howard, Clint Mansell, Dario Marianelli, Gustavo Santaolalla, and Howard Shore.
His work in art has led to numerous collaborations and the creation of his own installations, titled "aural frames." Notable art partnerships include Minimalism master Richard Nonas at The Venice Biennale, Lucia Bosé at the Picasso exhibition in Padova, and a solo show at Scatola Bianca in Venice.
Gary Marlowe is a Berlinale Talent alumnus and a voting member of both the World Soundtrack Academy and the European Film Academy.
